Mansfield District Council has confirmed that agreements with both the leaseholder and freeholder of the Walkden Street site are complete, clearing the way for demolition work to begin.
The council has formally surrendered its lease on the site, removing future lease liabilities and responsibilities. The multi-storey car park suffered a partial collapse in August 2025 and was subsequently deemed unsafe.
What happens next
The council has appointed a contractor, and works are expected to commence within the next few weeks. Demolition is expected to take approximately 16 to 18 weeks to complete.
Once demolition is finished, responsibility for the future redevelopment of the site will sit with the landowners.

Businesses on Stockwell Gate will remain open and accessible throughout the demolition works. The council has been in regular contact with the businesses to provide updates and support during the process, and is working closely with contractors and partners to minimise disruption wherever possible.

James Biddlestone, Chief Executive of Mansfield District Council, said: "Following the collapse of Walkden Street Car Park, our priority has always been the safety of residents, visitors and businesses, while securing the best possible long term outcome for the council and taxpayers. I am pleased that we have now reached a final agreement which provides certainty and allows this matter to be brought to a conclusion."
Elected Mayor of Mansfield Andy Abrahams said: "This is a positive milestone for Mansfield and the conclusion of a lengthy process following the collapse of the car park. The agreement means the council can move on from a situation that carried significant long term financial risks while ensuring that a solution has been found for the site."
